Guiding Question

Will the height of the bird feeder effect the amount of bird seed eaten?

Independent variable: Height of the bird feeder.
Dependent variable: Amount of bird seed eaten.
Constants: Location of feeder(spot, not height), amount of seed originally put in the feeder, amount of time the birds have to feed, type of bird seed.

Procedure for Investigation
  • Day 1. A. Make 2 bird feeders out of plastic bottles.
B. Fill the feeders to the top with bird seed and place one of them about 10 ft above the ground, and the other one on the ground.
  • Day 2.A. Weigh the amount of bird seed left in the feeders.
B. Refill the same feeders and place them in the same spots.
  • Day 3. A. Weigh the amount of bird seed left in the feeders.
B. Refill the feeders again and place them in the same spot.
C. Repeat step B.
D. Record the results.
  • Day 4. A. Weigh the amount of seed left in the feeders.
B. Add up the total amount of seed left in the feeders after the 3 days.
C. Post my results and conclusion on the bird wiki page!!
Materials
Bird feeders, bird seed, my brilliant brain, scale.
Hypothesis
I think that birds will eat more if the feeder is as high in the tree as possible.
Results and Data
After one week of having my feeders out, there is no difference in the weight of the food between the feeders. The weight is the same as when I started. After further research I noticed that other people who did the same sort of experiment recorded that the birds ate more, or just ate it quicker, out of the feeder that was higher in the tree.
Interpretation of Results

Conclusion
After my experiment I think that birds in the Durham area don't like to eat as much in the winter.
